Deep-Sea Fishing

Deep sea fishing is awsome; it’s a great day out on the trolling boat and fishing in Ascension Bay, Sian Ka’an is a lot of fun and sets you up perfectly for a great evening back at the bar in Punta Allen, talking about your experiences with friends and enjoying a well deserved rest over beers, cocktails and delicious food after a long, memorable day!

Ascension Bay’s deep sea fishing on the trolling boat is known and revered the world over by experienced fishermen who come here regularly to take part. The Caribbean waters off Sian Ka’an are home to dorado (mahi mahi), sailfish, white and blue marlin, snapper, slammer dolphins, blackfin, skipjack, yellowfin tuna, kingfish and wahoo, depending on the time of year.

Sailfish, the number one target species in the area. This beautiful billfish has a large dorsal fin, resembling a sail. This fish is noted for its fighting ability and often spends as much the battle in the air as in the water. Very difficult to catch - from enticing it to take the bait, to keeping it on the line while it is dancing on the surface. A very exciting sport fish.

White Marlin, a tough fighter. Once a marlin take your bait be prepared for a good battle and aerial display. They will take every opportunity to shake the hook off.

Blue Marlin is the largest of Atlantic billfish. It is not uncommon to see this huge fish heave itself into the sky in a seemingly inexhaustible display of strength. Our populations reach 500 lbs. although they may reach 1,800 lbs. in other parts of the Atlantic.

Wahoo, is game fish known for its hard running speeds of 45 mph. Wahoos are easily recognized by their long slender body with gorgeous blue vertical stripes. A very tasty fish for eating.

Tuna are among the world’s hardest running fish and can give you a hell of a battle. In the Ascension Bay you can catch Yellowfin, Blackfin and Skipjack tunas.

Barracuda, alias Tiger of the Sea is an inquisitive and aggressive predator. Found inshore, it provides an aerial display, often jumping out of the water. You cannot mistake this fish, its saber like teeth area an easy giveaway.

Dorado or Mahi Mahi are found in warm waters world wide, the Dorado is among the most colorful of the game fish. Its hard fighting and gold-green and blue colors makes this fish one of the most popular.

Tips:
Reserve in advance - especially during the high season. Deep sea fishing in Ascension Bay, Sian Ka’an is really popular and if you travel down to Punta Allen in high season without having made a reservation, you might be disappointed. The best trolling boats and the best crews always sell out ahead of time.

Snorkeling

Sian Ka’an is also an ideal place from which to explore the Meso-American Reef. It contains some of the most highly-developed coral formations in the world (more than 65 species of stony coral), supporting an amazing diversity of marine life. More than 500 species of fish have been recorded along the reef

Bird Watching

Over 350 avian species have been sighted in the Reserve, including many species which cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Kayaking

Enjoy a fantastic kayak navigating on the wetlands around of the Sian Ka’an reserve, sometimes we see crocodiles as well other fauna.
